Griffith University

Institution Profile

Griffith University was established in 1971 and began teaching in 1975, with a commitment to offering progressive and interdisciplinary education. From its inception, the university focused on new areas of study such as Asian studies and environmental science, breaking with traditional academic structures and helping redefine the Australian higher education landscape.

Today, Griffith is known for its inclusive ethos and strong engagement with real-world issues. The university is deeply connected to the Asia-Pacific region and is recognised for leadership in areas such as criminology, public health, tourism, and performing arts.

Popular Programs

Music and Performing Arts

The Queensland Conservatorium is one of Australia’s premier music institutions, offering training in classical, jazz, popular music, composition, and vocal performance. Students regularly perform on national stages and collaborate with the Sydney Opera House and ABC. 

Hospitality and Tourism Management

Ranked in the world’s top 30 (ARWU 2023), Griffith’s program benefits from its location on the Gold Coast, a tourism hub. Students access internships at global hotels like Marriott and Hilton and have opportunities for exchanges in Singapore and Switzerland. 

Criminology and Criminal Justice

Griffith is home to Australia’s first dedicated criminology research centre, with expertise in cybercrime, youth justice, and forensic psychology. Programs offer applied pathways into policy, policing, and legal reform. 

Film Production and Media

Griffith Film School is one of the largest in Australia, with specialisations in animation, game design, and documentary production. Student work is regularly featured in global festivals like Cannes Short Film Corner and SXSW. 

Environmental Science and Marine Management

Focused on climate adaptation and coastal ecosystems, this program includes immersive fieldwork on the Great Barrier Reef and endangered coastal habitats. Strong emphasis on applied research and conservation policy.
